Hats Off to Indiana Dunes National Park!

An American treasure adjacent to major cities

Visited date: August 14, 2017
Location: 1215 State Highway 49, Porter, IN

The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is a national treasure within an hour of the Chicago metropolitan area. We visited with Bruce Rowe, Supervisory Park Ranger and Public Information Officer. Because of its accessibility to urban areas, schools can bring children on field trips providing, in many cases, a first forest experience for inner city kids.

There are several beautiful beaches, and our favorite is the beach at Mount Baldy, the highest dune at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The beach has a gorgeous view of a gigantic sand dune and spectacular Lake Michigan! To access the beach at this prime location, follow a trail to the left of Mount Baldy. It is easy for adults to climb this moderate trail, but would be a challenge carrying children and beach equipment. Enjoy your visit to Indiana Dunes!
