California Highway 1

Hats off to California Highway 1

California Highway 1 hugs the Pacific coastline through some of the most dramatic scenery in the country, with hairpin turns, towering cliffs, and endless ocean views. We’ve driven this stretch several times, and it never gets old.

From many of the viewing points along the way, you can hike a good distance down toward the water on well-worn trails. Just wear long pants — poison oak is common along this stretch of coast, and my sister once learned that the hard way after a few miserable days. It’s also worth knowing that parts of Highway 1 have washed out over the last decade, so sections are closed for repairs at any given time. Check current road conditions before you go. While you’re in the area, don’t miss Elephant Seal Beach.
