Hats off to the Bridges of Madison County

Madison County, Iowa is home to six historic covered bridges, made famous by the novel and movie The Bridges of Madison County. All six are within about a 30-minute drive of Winterset, but they’re spread out enough that seeing all of them takes a full day. The drive between bridges isn’t the flat, endless cornfield view people sometimes picture when they think of Iowa — it’s surprisingly hilly, winding through rolling countryside and a few stretches of gravel road along the way.
