Elephant Seal Beach

Hats off to Friends of the Elephant Seal

Hats off to Friends of the Elephant Seal, the volunteer group that watches over this colony just north of San Simeon, California, on Scenic Highway 1. Elephant seals come ashore here every January through March to have their pups and breed, and they stay on the beach the entire time without eating. The mature males weigh around 5,000 pounds when they arrive and about 4,000 pounds by the time they leave in March.
